General Practitioners

RACGP ACRRM

This activity provides general practitioners (GPs) with a structured overview of assessing and managing dysphonia and related voice disorders. It emphasises accurate history-taking, differentiation between common causes of hoarseness, and appropriate initial management strategies for conditions such as upper respiratory infections and reflux. The activity also highlights key red flags that warrant specialist referral and explores more complex voice and laryngeal disorders, including their medical and surgical treatment options. Additionally, it introduces diagnostic tools like laryngoscopy and stroboscopy, aiming to equip GPs with practical skills to manage routine cases effectively while recognising when to involve subspecialists for optimal patient care.

Learning outcomes

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Define the different types, signs and symptoms, and classifications of voice disorders, and identify their respective causes.
  • Recognise the epidemiological data relating to voice disorders, including incidence, prevalence, demographics, risk factors, as well as the impact that voice disorders can have on the quality of life of affected individuals.
  • Assess voice and laryngeal disorders, considering factors such as patient history, symptoms, and physical examination, to determine the need for referral and the appropriate timing and recipient of the referral.
  • Differentiate between the multidisciplinary team roles, as well as the roles of specialised laryngology and speech pathology services, and advanced diagnostic techniques in the management of voice and laryngeal disorders.
  • Recognise the indications for subspecialty or multidisciplinary review and treatments that are only available in subspecialist practice for voice and laryngeal disorders.
  • Evaluate and advocate for appropriate treatment approaches for common voice and laryngeal disorders, including speech-language pathology intervention, surgical interventions, and other interventions specific to certain diagnoses.
